If This Watch Could Talk: The Rolex Daytona "Paul Newman" 6263

BY JAMES SAMPSON

Some watches are born icons. Others earn their status over time. The Rolex Daytona "Paul Newman" 6263 belongs to the latter - a timepiece that went from an under-appreciated oddity to one of the most sought-after collector’s watches in history. It’s a watch with a story so compelling, it might just talk if given the chance.

A Gift That Sparked a Legacy

The Rolex Daytona wasn’t always the grail it is today. In the 1960s, it was a slow seller, often overlooked in favour of more traditional Rolex dress watches. But then came Paul Newman, Hollywood actor, race car driver, and all-around style icon. In 1968, his wife, actress Joanne Woodward, gifted him a Rolex Daytona Ref. 6239 with an "exotic dial," distinguished by its contrasting sub-dials and Art Deco-style numerals. She had it engraved with the words “Drive Carefully, Me” - a nod to his passion for motorsport.

At the time, these exotic-dial Daytonas weren’t particularly popular, making them relatively rare. But Paul Newman’s consistent wear of the watch—both on and off the racetrack - slowly transformed its reputation. Collectors took notice, and by the 1980s, these once-overlooked models had acquired a new name: the "Paul Newman Daytona."

From Underdog to Auction Star

What makes the Rolex Daytona 6263 so special isn’t just its association with Paul Newman. It’s also the craftsmanship, the bold aesthetic, and the rarity. The 6263 features a black acrylic bezel, screw-down pushers for increased water resistance, and, of course, that signature exotic dial that differentiates it from standard Daytonas.

As interest in vintage watches skyrocketed, so did the demand for "Paul Newman" Daytonas. They became the ultimate status symbol for serious collectors, with prices steadily climbing at auction. But nothing could have prepared the watch world for what happened in 2017.

Paul Newman’s actual Daytona - the very one gifted to him by Joanne Woodward - went under the hammer at Phillips auction house. The bidding was relentless, and when the gavel finally dropped, the watch sold for an astonishing $17.8 million, making it the most expensive Rolex ever sold at auction.

Why It Matters

The Paul Newman Daytona 6263 is more than just a timepiece. It’s a testament to how a watch can transcend its function and become part of a cultural narrative. It speaks to the power of provenance, storytelling, and the way a single person’s connection to a watch can elevate its significance beyond mere mechanics.

Today, owning a "Paul Newman" Daytona - especially a reference like the 6263 - is a privilege few collectors can claim. But the legend of this watch lives on, not just in the auctions where it breaks records, but in the enduring legacy of Paul Newman himself - a man whose effortless cool turned an overlooked Rolex into a multi-million-dollar masterpiece.
