The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon Openworked in sand gold is one of those rare pieces that feels genuinely different the moment you see it. At 41mm, it has all the sharp presence you’d expect from a Royal Oak, but the real magic is in the way AP’s sand gold plays with the light. Sitting somewhere between white gold and pink gold, it shifts beautifully on the wrist and gives this watch a softer, more unusual edge than your typical precious metal sports watch. 

Then there’s the dial or rather, everything happening beneath it. The openworked movement puts the mechanics front and centre, with the flying tourbillon suspended at 6 o’clock adding the kind of theatre you never really get tired of. It’s technical, no doubt, but more importantly, it just looks incredible. Every angle gives you something new to take in, from the architecture and depth of the movement to the contrast between the skeletonised calibre and that warm sand gold case and bracelet. 

This is AP doing what AP does best: taking an icon and pushing it somewhere more daring, more refined, and far more interesting. Super cool doesn’t quite cover it.

Inside, the calibre 2972 keeps things precise and dependable, reinforcing the Offshore’s reputation as something built to be worn, not just admired. On the wrist, it feels solid and assured, but never overwhelming. A quieter kind of authority.
