The Patek Philippe Calatrava 6196P-001 is a lesson in how little a great dress watch actually needs. A platinum case, manually wound movement and small seconds display form the foundation, but it is the rose gilt opaline dial that gives this otherwise restrained Calatrava its character.

At 38mm, the platinum case gives the 6196P enough presence without losing the proportions expected of a traditional Calatrava. The warm, salmon toned dial creates an unusual contrast against the cool platinum case, complemented by anthracite coated white gold obus hour markers and dauphine hands. Small seconds sit cleanly at six o'clock, while Patek Philippe's discreet diamond between the lugs provides the traditional indication of a platinum case.

Behind the simplicity is the manually wound calibre 30-255 PS. Its twin barrel construction provides approximately 65 hours of power reserve, while the stop seconds mechanism allows the time to be set precisely. Visible through the sapphire crystal caseback, its broad architecture fills the case in a way that feels particularly appropriate for a watch built around traditional hand winding.
