The Patek Philippe Complications 5205G-013 makes a complicated calendar unusually easy to understand. Day, date and month are arranged across three apertures at the top of the dial, while the annual calendar automatically accounts for 30 and 31 day months, requiring just one correction each year at the end of February.

Its 40mm white gold case is distinguished by skeletonised lugs, recessed flanks and a concave bezel, giving the 5205 a profile quite separate from Patek Philippe’s more traditional round cases. The sunburst blue dial darkens towards a black gradient rim, with moon phases and a 24 hour indication sharing the display at six o’clock.

The 5205G-013 turns a useful complication into an equally strong piece of design. Three apertures make the calendar immediately legible, while the annual mechanism reduces its interaction to a single correction each year. It is mechanical complexity that makes ownership simpler rather than asking more from it.
